$90million is all they will spend over five yearsIt’s too little. If they really want to increase governmental security, they should plunk for GNU/Linux on desktop and server. The savings on licence fees will go a ways toward securing the system and that is way more than $3.5 million. They likely have more tha 100K computers. Saving hundreds of dollars per machine is tens of millions of dollars saved and that is saved every few years with upgrades. Government and large organizations should spend on programmers and other IT pros instead of on licence fees for second-rate software such as M$ produces.

What I meant is that the goverment should port to something even more obscure, like Plan 9.
As a taxpayer I would prefer my taxes go to pay for hardware rather than software and getting work done instead of sniffing for DRM, software licences, and malware. Also, I’d rather my government’s machines had more uptime and fewer re-re-reboots. The government could hire a lot of programmers for the prices of those licences. I would also like my government’s websites and documents to be viewable on any platform.
To tell you the truth, I don’t think Canada should switch to Linux. Sure, it’s more secure than Windows, but it’s just to popular.
