The suggestion has been made that acquiring Yahoo! is a move by M$ to become bigger and more competitive against Google. Why the high bid, though? Yahoo! has been in some trouble lately so should not a lower bid be sufficient? Why does M$ want all of Yahoo! ?

A wag on cnn.money commented that he thought this was a sign of desperation on the part of M$. Yahoo! run FreeBSD and GNU/Linux so if M$ buys it, they will either be acknowledging the superiority of FreeBSD over that other OS or they will convert Yahoo! to that other OS with a resulting disaster… Come to think of it, how are they going to sell that other OS to businesses with a straight face when they do not use it themselves? To migrate Yahoo! could be a major disaster. What if it does not work?

This could all be a tempest in a teapot as the regulators around the world may have some say on the deal. A monopoly has such a hard time embracing-extending-extinguishing competitors these days.

Having confidence that the end of that other OS is near under the glare of widespread adoption of GNU/Linux on the desktop in 2008, I think this bid means M$ is looking for an exit strategy. The monopolies on the desktop and office suite will end sooner, rather than later, and M$ wants to stake out new turf in search and web 2.0. Nothing else makes much sense. Even the attempt to keep SCOG v World going with new cash is obviously a sign of desperation. M$ must see the writing on the wall and it is in all languages from every corner of the Earth.
